Personal Safety
- Slipping and Falling hazards
- Ice Build-up around hangar or hangar door when opening
- Dress for the conditions – pre/post flight, refueling, potential off airport landing
Preflight
- Snow /Frost on aircraft surfaces -
- Pitot/Static, Stall Horn, Fuel Vent – No blockage
- Pitot Heat operation
- Tire Inflation
- Nose Strut – proper charge (three fingers)
- Brakes – snow/ice pack, slow taxi
Engine Operation
- Avoid Over priming to prevent engine fire – review flooded engine start procedure
- Starter Limitations – Observe limits in POH
- Oil Pressure Response – If not responding in 30 sec, shutdown
- Oil Temp – On-scale (in the Green) prior to takeoff
- Exercise Prop 3X on a cold run-up
- Shock Cooling
- Descents and Simulate Eng Failure with 1200 rpm/12” MP only : 20°F to 10°F
- No student solos in C152 below 20°F
- No Flying Below 10°F without Chief Pilot approval
- No flying with iced/snow packed runways or taxiways, front desk will keep you posted
- Cowl Flap operation/monitor CHT
- Use of Carburetor Heat – power below green and on descent
- Review Carbon Monoxide poisoning symptoms
Ramp/Runway
- Snowbanks – obscuring view or potential to contact wing tip
- Taxi/ramp surface conditions
- Braking action, listen to ATIS, NOTAMs
- Taxi slowly
Icing Conditions
- Avoidance – Forecasts, stay out of visible moisture above freezing level
- Review symptoms of Tail Ice Stalls and use of flaps in icing indications
